The George Crothers Memorial School is a private, state-licensed school for children, teens and young adults with mental retardation, brain damage, or cerebral palsy between the ages of 2 and 21. The ungraded special education classes include academic and life skills training as well as pre-vocational, therapeutic, social, and recreational activities. The challenging program strives to develop each student to his or her highest potential.
Speech, occupational, and physical therapy are integrated into the program based on the student’s individualized education plan. Vision services and social work services are also available. Registered nurses are on staff to administer medication, provide first aid and attend to the needs of medically fragile students.
Adapted physical education, music and art are included as part of the educational program. Community integration is provided through taking students out into the community (i.e. field trips, swimming, job experience) as well as bringing the community into the school via assemblies, special events, visiting students, etc.
The George Crothers Memorial School has very low staff turnover. Our teachers and therapists have been with us an average of 11 years and our teacher assistants an average of 7 years.
Class size ranges from 7 to 10 students. Each class is staffed with a PA certified special education teacher and at least 2 teacher assistants.
Transportation is provided through the local school district.
Limited extended school year services are available for the summer.
