CHILDREN AND ADULT DISABILITY

CADES has built an all abilities playground in which children with disabilities and typically developing children can play together and interact in an age appropriate setting. Nearly 50% of the children who attend the George Crothers School at CADES requires some form of wheeled mobility (wheelchair or stroller) to access their school environment. This places them at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to accessing playground equipment. They are frequently left in the position of being passive observers instead of active participants. We have created a playground that is accessible to wheelchairs including ramps, swings and activities that would be within the reach of a child in a wheelchair. Additionally we hope to welcome the surrounding neighborhood and community of children regardless of physical abilities. In our main entrance there is a beautiful mural that leads out to the playground. This work was artistically designed under the direction of Professor Marietta D'Antonio Fryer of Cheyney University. Many of the University professors including Professor Joel T. Keener, Professor Helena Domenic and Professor Gaille Hunter offered their time and talents mentoring the Cheyney University art students painting an inspirational tribute to the CADES Community which we will treasure for years to come. CADES would like to thank Regina Collins and Claire Shallow, both Special Education Teacher in the George Crothers Memorial School, for donating their time to get the CADES Community Playground project off the ground and for seeing it through to the glorious end. The students, consumer, and staff of CADES are truly appreciative of the effort each of them devoted to the project. CADES will celebrate the first anniversary of the all abilities playground with a tree dedication on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 10:00 am.
